Food Truck Bazaar

Do you love trying new food, but hate sitting in stuffy, overcrowded restaurants while attempting to enjoy your meal? Then you may want to explore the world of food trucks- and don’t worry about trying to track one down in Santa Monica, instead come to the Food Truck Bazaar right outside the California Heritage Museum, ANY (or every) Tuesday of the month!

Trucks Every Tuesday?!

As one of the first weekly gourmet food truck lots in the Los Angeles area, the Food Truck Bazaar is held every Tuesday outside of the California Heritage Museum from 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. The cuisine served ranges anywhere from Thai to grilled cheese, yet is always equally delicious. The lot normally hosts around five food trucks and there is no cost to attend, with the exception of food costs. The California Heritage Museum offers free parking for attendees and some of the surrounding bars and restaurants allow visitors to eat food truck goodies at their tables. Meter parking is also available nearby, as well as, plenty of places to lock up your bike. Food trucks that have made appearances in the past include Blast (liquid nitrogen) Ice Cream, Chancho’s Tacos and NoMad Truck. The food trucks change every week, so check out the online calendar to see which trucks will be attending when you plan on visiting!

Food Truck Rising Popularity

Dating back all the way to 1691 when street vendors sold food from push carts, the idea of a mobile food truck has always been present in the minds of Americans one way or another. In the early 1900s, the Army used mobile kitchens to feed soldiers and as the 50s rolled around, ice cream trucks began selling their frozen treats to kids and adults alike. However, true food trucks like the ones we are familiar with today didn’t start until the 1980s when grease trucks parked at Rutgers University in New Jersey selling “Fat Sandwiches” to college students. Since then, the food truck industry has exploded- with Wikipedia adding “food truck” to their list of pages, the creation of the Vendy Awards (identifying New York City’s best food trucks) and the Food Network competition, “The Great Food Truck Race”. The gourmet food trucks now parked across the nation can ultimately attribute part of their success today to the humble food cart peddler from 1691.
